ARC Review: The Asylum Interviews: Bronx

The Asylum Interviews: Bronx (The Asylum Tales, #0.5)

ARC
ebook
87 pages
July 3rd 2012
Harper Voyager

Summary from Goodreads:

In Low Town, where humans walk and work side-by-side with elves, vampires, ogres, and all manner of creature, it's understandable that people occasionally need a little help in their lives. Whether is love, work, or ... other, tattoo artists are there to try to help turn the odds into your favor. When Gage's friend Parker needs help with his love life, tattoo artists Gage and Bronx are only too happy to help. But the incubus ends up getting more than he bargained for with his new tattoo, and his friends are forced to scramble to fix the mess they've created before someone gets hurt.

Review:

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this book and I couldn't be more happy!  I devoured every Dark Days book she wrote and I after reading this short story I know that The Asylum Tales series will be no different.  The first full novel Angels Ink will be released on October 16, 2012.

The Asylum Interviews: Bronx is a prequel to the new series.   Drake has done an amazing job of setting up a new world.  We got to see trolls, warlocks, and incubus' in this short and I have fallen in love with them all.

Gage is a tattoo artist who just happens to be a warlock too.  He is not supposed to be doing magic anymore but he just cant seem to help himself.  It just come naturally to him.  I really liked Gage.  He seems like he has a really good story to tell and I cant wait to find out what he does next!

I found that I immediately liked Bronx.  He is a troll tattoo artist.  Even though he kind of messed up with Parker the incubus's tattoo he does what ever it takes to make it right.  He just seems to be very good hearted.  I also like that he will turn to stone in sunlight.

The twists and turns were just amazing.  I never knew what was going to happen next.  I don't usually read books from a male point of view but it really worked for this book.  I enjoyed seeing the males interaction with no females around and how they figure out problem.  It was surprisingly refreshing.

Jocelynn Drake has done it again and I have not doubt this series will hit the top of every chart.  I cant wait to see what happens next.  The Asylum Interviews: Bronx will be release on July 3.  Do yourself a favor and pre order it right now.

Summary from Goodreads:

She's a mortal with dark powers...

After a tragic accident scarred her body and destroyed her dreams, Leila never imagined that the worst was still to come: terrifying powers that let her channel electricity and learn a person's darkest secrets through a single touch. Leila is doomed to a life of solitude...until creatures of the night kidnap her, forcing her to reach out with a telepathic distress call to the world's most infamous vampire...

He's the Prince of Night...

Vlad Tepesh inspired the greatest vampire legend of all—but whatever you do, don't call him Dracula. Vlad's ability to control fire makes him one of the most feared vampires in existence, but his enemies have found a new weapon against him—a beautiful mortal with powers to match his own. When Vlad and Leila meet, however, passion ignites between them, threatening to consume them both. It will take everything that they are to stop an enemy intent on bringing them down in flames.

Review by Amy:

Ok let me say first, I have never read the book Dracula nor have I watched the original movie. Vlad you sexy ,sexy man I was waiting for the real deal. Once again Jeaniene Frost didn't let me down. I was captured in the first chapter and couldn't put the book down. I liked Leila from the start and can honestly say she is the perfect woman for Vlad since I can't have him.

The story begins with Leila, a young woman, who works with a traveling circus. As a child she touched a downed power line and it resulted in giving her special abilities. Her life is lived each day avoiding people as best possible because direct contact with her will electricute them. She also see's into the past, present and future by making contact with her right hand. This endangers her life when she is abducted by vampires who want to use her to capture Vlad Tepesh.

While being held against her will she is told to find him and determine when he will be vulnerable. She does as she is told only to discover that he is a mind reader and knows she is spying on him. She decides to put her life in his hands by convincing him she is not his enemy and needs help.

Vlad rescues her and begins to use her abilities to find the mastermind behind his betrayl. An accidental brush of her hand shows Leila that she will be Vlads lover but is that something she wants or can she change the future? He is ruthless when it comes to protecting what is his, and torture is not beyond his method to get what needs to be done. Leila questions if she can be with someone who has such small compassion for life.

As Leila fights for her life and the life of her loved ones she discovers that this mysterious man is making himself at home in her heart. The problem is he has made it perfectly clear that love is an emotion beyond him. Is her love enough to make this work or will it all go up in flames????

Review: Beauty by LKH

Beauty (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter #20.5)

Paranormal / Urban Fantasy
ebook
31 pages
May 8th 2012
Berkley

Summary:

The steamy outtake that takes readers even further into Laurell K. Hamilton’s bestselling novel, Kiss the Dead.

You’d think I’d get used to seeing such a beautiful man and knowing he was mine, but it never grew old, as if his beauty and the fact that he was mine, and I was his, would forever surprise me.

With a vampire like Jean Claude around, it’s far too easy for Anita Blake to doubt her own appearance—and the hold it has on those who love her. But one hot tub and two incredibly sexy men—Jean Claude and Asher—will make her feel like the most lusted-after woman alive…or undead. Not bad for a mere human…

Includes an excerpt of Kiss the Dead, the new Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter novel.

Review:

I really enjoy LKH books.  I know that a lot of people have stopped reading her books but I find myself returning to them often.  I love a good paranormal book with lots of drama, mystery and sex and LKH still delivers that for me!

Beauty was a very short especial.  The entire short story a sex scene between JC, Asher and Anita and I loved every min of it.

My only complaint is that she gives us a whole chapter of character descriptions.  As a long time reader of this series I don't need that I just want to get to the good stuff.  So if you already know how sexy JC and Asher are then just start right up with chapter two.  If your new to the series then set back and enjoy seeing just how hot and sexy two Vampires look in a steaming hot bathtub sex scene.

Review: Rapture by Lauren Kate

Rapture (Fallen, #4)

Young Adult
Hardcover
448 pages
June 12th 2012
Delacorte Books for Young Readers

Summary from Goodreads:

RAPTURE, the fourth & final FALLEN novel, is the Lauren Kate book the world has been waiting for.

The sky is dark with wings. . . .

Like sand through an hourglass, time is running out for Luce and Daniel. To stop Lucifer from erasing the past, they must find the place where the angels fell to earth.

Dark forces are after them, and Daniel doesn’t know if he can do this—live only to lose Luce again and again. Yet together they face an epic battle that will end with lifeless bodies . . . and angel dust. Great sacrifices are made. Hearts are destroyed.

And suddenly Luce knows what must happen. For she was meant to be with someone other than Daniel. The curse they’ve borne has always and only been about her—and the love she cast aside. The choice she makes now is the only one that truly matters. In the fight for Luce, who will win?

The astonishing conclusion to the FALLEN series. Heaven can’t wait any longer.

Review:

First let me say that I have loved the Fallen series since the very beginning.  It just doesn't get better than fallen angels, forbidden love and a 6000 year old curse.

I always liked the relationship of Daniel and Luce and in this book it was no exception.  The angels are on a hunt to find three relics that will reveal the site of the Fall from Heaven.  That is where they expect to find Lucifer in the Announcer.   They hope to stop him from resetting time.

The beginning of this book was great.  I loved the moments alone with Luce and Daniel.  They are just so sweet together and you can see how much love they share.  Luce has finally started to stand on her own which was nice to see.

The middle of the book had some great action.  I really enjoyed the Outcasts this time around.  They played a vital role in the final war not to mention that the kicked some ass.  We lose some key players in the series and it broke my heart.
I really did want to see more of Cam.  He is my favorite character from this series and I felt like he got left out.  I want to know what happens to him.  He has a really good heart and I hate the way it ended for him.  I also expected more action.  I mean come on there is supposed to be a war between Heaven and Hell going on.  That should be epic and it was NOT.

Overall I really did enjoy Rapture. While reading I laughed out loud, I growled, and I cried. Any book that can get that many emotions from me is a good book.

If you want to hear my rant about the end of Rapture feel free to keep reading....

***SPOILERS***

I hated the end of this book.  I think that is was crazy that after everything that Daniel and Luce went through that the Throne would make them not remember anything and then turn them mortal.  Luce just got her wings back.  I mean come on that just SUCKS.  I also hate that the other angels just got pushed to the back burner.  We got left not knowing anything about what happens to them.  Cam just flies off and Arrianne and Roland only get to watch Luce and Daniel from afar.  They are allowed no contact with them.  They cant even guide Luce and Daniel together in their final life.  We get to see Daniel and Luce meet for the first time as mortals and that was nice it just wasn't what I wanted to happen. The only good ending that we got to see was Shelby and Miles.
The first 3/4 of this book was wonderful and romantic.  I really enjoyed it.  However for those of you that haven't read it yet do yourself a favor and when Luce gets her wings back and learns the truth close the book and make up your own ending.  You will be more satisfied I promise.

If you have read Rapture I would love to hear what you thought of the ending.

Author Interview: J. Meyers

J. Meyers is the author of Intuition and Intangible. She has quickly found her place as one of my favorite authors.  Her books are wonderful!

You can find my review of Intuition Here and Intangible Here.

You can get your free copy of Intuition right now at Amazon or Barnes and Noble.

Get your copy of Intangible at Amazon, Barnes and Noble or J. Meyers Official Store.

When visiting J. Meyers Site you can get a signed paperback of Intangible as well as some awesome bookmarks and tattoos!

Interview:

1. Why in the world did you decide to go with self publishing? It would seem like with content this good publishers would be begging you for a contract.

You know, I chose to self publish because it just made better business sense with the changing climate of the publishing industry. I actually never pursued a traditional contract or agent representation with this book. I went straight to self publishing because I'd really like to make a living as a writer and that's a lot more likely to happen as an indie author. This is why: a traditionally published author's royalty cut of an ebook is only 14.9% of the purchase price. So if an ebook is priced at $9.99, that author gets $1.49 for every ebook sold. But an indie author's cut is 70%. So on that same $9.99 book, the indie author gets $6.99 for every ebook sold. It's really hard to argue with that math. :-) Plus I have more control over EVERYTHING, which I really like. I can create the kind of book I want and package it in a cover that I love and feels appropriate to the story. I decide when it's ready to be published, what the price will be, and when to offer it for a sale price.

2. The ending left us with a lot of possibilities as to where the next book was headed. Can you give a little spoiler for the next book?

Luke discovers the COOLEST thing he can do to change the future. I'm so excited about this I can barely sit still long enough to write it! :D (But I'm not going to tell you what it is.) Also, there's more heat between Luke and Fey . . . and more going on between Sera and Jonas. Oh, and Marc comes back.

3. How many more books do you think we will be getting in this series?

I have three more planned out (so a total of four in the series) at the moment. But who knows? It may be more or less. I'm also toying with the idea of companion novels or series of other Gifteds. Or maybe even a bunch of novellas.

4. I just love Jonas! He is by far my favorite character. Who is your favorite?

I love Jonas, too! But I don't think I have a favorite. I really love each of the characters so much that I can't pick just one that I like more than the others. At least at this point I do not have a clear favorite. Maybe that will change.

5. Intangible seemed to kind of center around Sera and her healing. Will the next book be more about Luke?

Yes, the next book is more focused on Luke. (Did I mention that SUPER COOL thing he discovers that I'm not going to tell you about? I'm SO excited about it.) (I know it's hard to tell.) ;-)

6. Why elves? I was really not expecting that at all. I love the idea. Will we get more about elves in future books?

Originally I decided there had to be elves in the story because I didn't want this to be just another vampire book. I wanted it to be different and have more to it than the usual vampires and werewolves. And actually I wanted to be able to use ANY supernatural species that might fit into the story or even make up new ones or variations. (I think it comes down to that I don't want to be limited. Which is a big reason I like writing paranormal/fantasy.) There is much more about the elves in the next book, and the Realm as well.

7.  When do you expect the next book to be released?

I'm working on book two right now and have seriously high hopes (that may be unrealistic, but I hope not) that it'll be ready by the end of the year. Fingers AND toes crossed.

Thanks so much, Alicia! I'm absolutely thrilled that you enjoyed it so much. It's really wonderful to hear. :-)

Thank you J. Meyers for taking the time to answer my questions.  We look forward to reading that next book! (Fingers crossed ~ by the end of the year!)

Guest Review: Demon Girl

I want it introduce Amy Brooks to you today!  She has wrote a review for you on Demon Girl by Penelope Fletcher.  I hope you enjoy!  Lets be sure to leave her some comment love!

Young Adult Fantasy
January 19, 2011
ebook
288 Pages
Createspace

Summary from Goodreads:
Rae Wilder has problems… Supernatural creatures swarm earth, and humanity is on the brink of extinction. Stalked by a handsome fairy who claims she is like him, demonkind, she thinks maybe it was a mistake breaking the rules by going over the Wall into demon territory.

Plunged into a world of dark magics, fierce creatures, and ritual sacrifice, she is charged with a guarding a magical amulet. The changes to her mind and body are startling, but rather than accept her purpose she struggles against who she is destined to be. Throw in a big lust for a vampire who can’t keep his hands off her, and life starts to get complicated.

Rae is forced to make the ultimate choice: to live and die human, or embrace her birth-right and wield magics that could turn her into something wicked, a force of nature nothing can control.

Review:
Rae is a Sect Disciple that was abandoned at birth at Temple. Never feeling like she fit in growing up she discovers that she enjoys sneaking outside the protection of the wall to run in the forest. Although she knows the danger of demons, vampires and shifters she can't help but feel at peace when she is in the forest.

One morning her entire world is turned upside down. She meets Breandan the fairy and Thomas the vampire. Not knowing who to trust or why she is so drawn to both boys. She now has to come to terms with the fact that she is a demon herself.

As I read the book I was intrigued by the storyline. I couldn't stop myself from wondering which path she would choose. She kept comparing Thomas to darkness and Breandan to light. It was very much a young adult novel. I noticed a few miss prints and some grammar mistakes but I enjoyed the book. I am currently reading Demon Day, the second book in the series. I am excited to see where this story goes!

ARC Review: Once Burned by Jeaniene Frost

Review:

Once Burned is the first book in the Night Prince series.  This is a spin-off from the Night Huntress series.  This one features my favorite character in the series Vlad.  He has this whole arrogant, sexy and freighting thing going on all at once.  Which he takes as a compliment.  It just doesn't get any steamier than Vlad.

Once Burned is told from Leila's point of view.  We start by learning that she is human but has an extraordinary gift.  When she was younger she touched a down power line and when she awoke from a coma she learned that she had changed.  She now  has electricity coursing through her body at all times so when she touches someone they get a deadly shock.  With her gift comes the ability to see someones darkest sin with a single touch of her right hand.  She also sees memories from the past, present and future.  Which is why she gets herself kidnapped by vampires.  They want to use her ability to find the famous Vlad so they can kill him.

Vlad is still as smoldering as we remember him, but as he gets more acquainted with Leila we get to see that he does have a softer side to him.  Their romance is great.  They face off many times during this novel.  Vlad is used to getting his way however Leila doesn't seem to care if he likes what she has to say or not.  He knows that they will end up together  and he seems to enjoy embarrassing her about it.  She takes quite a bit of convincing but once they did end up together well let's just say there was one hell of a sizzling current. Their chemistry in Once Burned leaves you feeling breathless and wanting more.

This novel had a lot of action which is what I have come to expect from Jeaniene Frost.  She really knows how to lay out a plot  to keep you guessing.  The scenes change between action, romance, mystery and a little bit of heart break all in perfect time to keep you turning the page.   We even get to have a small scene with Cat and Bones.  You just can't have a Frost book without a little Bones action!

The final showdown was glorious.  Even with the many questions left unanswered I was happy with the ending.  Vlad and Leila's future is one vision we don't get in Once Burned.  How will this story unfold?  I applaud Frost's ability to leave you completely satisfied but also demanding more.  I don't think 2013 will come soon enough.

Once Burned is a blazing hot and electrifying read.  Night Huntress fans will devour this book in no time.  However if this is the first book in this world that you pick up have no fear, Once Burned will sweep you right in and leave you burning for more.

Review: Intangible by J. Meyers

Intangible

Young Adult
Ebook
264 pages
January 31st 2012
Self Published

Summary from Goodreads:

Twins Sera and Luke Raine have a well-kept secret—she heals with a touch of her hand, he sees the future. All their lives they’ve helped those in need on the sly. They’ve always thought of their abilities as being a gift.

Then Luke has a vision that Sera is killed. That gift they’ve always cherished begins to feel an awful lot like a curse. Because the thing about Luke’s ability? He’s always right. And he can’t do anything about it.

Review:

I was asked by J. Meyers to read and give a honest review of her book and that is what you are going to get today. Meyers has just made it to my top ten favorite authors list. She writes with such a new and unique voice. I just cant get enough.

Intangible sucked me in before I could finish the first chapter. Sera and Luke are just an amazing set of twins with the coolest powers. They are Gifteds. Sera can heal and Luke sees the future but there are consequences that go with not understanding where their powers come from or how to control them.

Luke keeps having a vision where Sera dies. He knows that he is powerless to stop it but that doesn't mean he isnt going to try. Sera learns that she can change a vampire into a human again with her healing power but the vampire leaders are not very happy about this. They want her dead.

The secondary characters in this novel are what really set this book apart from the masses. Marc is so intriguing. I feel so badly for him but I'm wary of him all at the same time. He is such a sweet guy but I just think he is wrong for Sera. Fey is the big sister type with a big secret but I think Luke might have some romantic feelings for her. I hope to see that relationship develop more in the coming books.

My favorite character is Jonas. He is a vampire with a little bit of humanity left in him. I found myself looking forward to moments when he would make an appearance. I loved that he is afraid of Sera changing him into a human with her touch but will still hold her hand to lead her through the dark no matter what.

I loved the flow of this book! It changes perspectives fluidly which was very refreshing. I loved that we could go from person to person to see what they see and to feel what they feel. I felt like I really got to know every ones inner workings that way.

The Realm was impressive. It is a parallel world that the non humans live in. The description was so vivid. I felt as though I was there myself. I enjoyed the vampires, dark elves and light elves. It was a very different concoction that was just inspiring. I hope we get to spend more time in the Realm. (cough, cough, with Jonas! cough)

No spoilers but the end of this novel opens up a world of questions for me. I think we will be seeing great things in the future for Luke and Sera. I really hope we get several more books. Thank you J. Meyers for such a wonderful read!

Review: My Soul To Lose

My Soul to Lose (Soul Screamers, #0.5)

ebook
87 pages
July 1st 2009
Harlequin Teen

Summary from Goodreads:

It was supposed to be a fun day, shopping at the mall with her best friend. Then the panic attack started and Kaylee Cavanaugh finds herself screaming, unable to stop. Her secret fears are exposed and it's the worst day of her life.
Until she wakes up in the psychiatric unit.
She tries to convince everyone she's fine--despite the shadows she sees forming around another patient and the urge to scream which comes burbling up again and again. Everyone thinks she's crazy. Everyone except Lydia, that is. Another patient with some special abilities....
"An eBook exclusive prequel to Rachel Vincent's SOUL SCREAMERS series."

Review:

I loved the suspense in this prequel.  It's supposed to be just a fun day shopping but everything goes wrong with Kaylee see a shadow surrounding a boy.  She starts screaming and cant stop.  The screaming lands her in a mental institution for having panic attacks.

Rachel Vincent never tell us what Kaylee is.  Kaylee's aunt and uncle are hiding something from her but we don't find out what.  Most of this story takes place in the mental instituition while Kaylee is trying to figure out what is wrong with her if anything.  Mostly she just wants to go home.

She meets a very strang girl named Lydia while there and while they dont really become friends in the end she really helps Kaylee out.  There is something special about Lydia but we dont find out what she is either.

This one is just full of mysteries but I am glad I started this series with this novella.  It really helps fill the gaps in the rest of the series.
