Cover Reveal: Release

Release by M. R. Merrick
December 10, 2012

SYNOPSIS

After uniting the shifters and calling in reinforcements, Chase has to face his toughest challenge yet: learning to control his emotions. But as tensions rise and his powers grow, controlling his emotions becomes the least of his problems.

Terrorized by a multi-shifter who is hell-bent on turning him, Chase questions just how far he’s willing to go to stop his father. Meanwhile, Tiki’s virtuous nature has placed him in the middle of Vincent’s past, leaving Chase to oppose a senate of vampires and defend a demon he hates.

Trying to balance his friends, his enemies, and his inner demons, Chase is left searching for answers about the Mark, his destiny, and where he can find the next soul piece. Stopping Riley is his top priority, but as more obstacles arise, he finds himself doubting all the decisions he’s made - especially regarding Rayna.

One thing is for certain: Chase has finally realized that he doesn’t know anything. The light doesn’t always quell the darkness, the monsters don’t always stay in the shadows, and the past doesn’t always stay in the past - sometimes, the demons inside are the hardest to fight.

ARC Review: Mystic City

Mystic City (Mystic City, #1)

Title: Mystic City
Author: Theo Lawrence
Release Date: October 9th 2012
Publisher:  Random House Children's Books
Format:  Hardcover
Source:  ARC from NetGalley
Pages: 352

Summary from Goodreads:

Aria Rose, youngest scion of one of Mystic City's two ruling rival families, finds herself betrothed to Thomas Foster, the son of her parents' sworn enemies. The union of the two will end the generations-long political feud—and unite all those living in the Aeries, the privileged upper reaches of the city, against the banished mystics who dwell below in the Depths. But Aria doesn't remember falling in love with Thomas; in fact, she wakes one day with huge gaps in her memory. And she can't conceive why her parents would have agreed to unite with the Fosters in the first place. Only when Aria meets Hunter, a gorgeous rebel mystic from the Depths, does she start to have glimmers of recollection—and to understand that he holds the key to unlocking her past. The choices she makes can save or doom the city—including herself.

Review:

Wow!  Just Wow!  Mystic City was an exhilarating ride from beginning to the end in this tale of a modern day Romeo and Juliet.  Aria and Thomas are star crossed lovers from feuding families.  The only problem is that Aria has no memory of Thomas.

Aria has been told by her family that she is desperatly in love with Thomas and that this marriage will end the feuding and unite the families so that they can gain complete power over the city.

When she finds that no matter what she does she still can't remember she decides to fall in love with him all over again.  The problem with this is that he seems distant and doesnt seem to really like her all that much.  So when she finds herself in trouble in the Depths and a strange mystic boy named Hunter comes to the rescue she can't seem to stop thinking about him.

Hunter is a rebel Mystic.  He has full access to his powers not to mention that he is incredibly cute!  He is sweet and charming and he proves that he would do anything for Aria no matter what the price is.  He loves her.  His only problem is trying to find a way to make her remember what she has lost.

I think that the political aspect of this book was really fun to watch play out,  I liked the family drama but the romance is what really made this story come alive.  Mystic City was everything I could have hoped for.  This truly is a forbidden romance with a twist that just leaves you wanting more.  I look forward to seeing what happens in the next book!

Poison Princess (The Arcana Chronicles, #1)

Title: Poison Princess
Author: Kresley Cole
Release Date: October 2, 2012
Publisher:   Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers
Source:  ARC won (thank you Mundie Moms)
Hardcover:  384 pages

She could save the world—or destroy it.

Sixteen year old Evangeline “Evie” Greene leads a charmed life, until she begins experiencing horrifying hallucinations. When an apocalyptic event decimates her Louisiana hometown, Evie realizes her hallucinations were actually visions of the future—and they’re still happening. Fighting for her life and desperate for answers, she must turn to her wrong-side-of-the-bayou classmate: Jack Deveaux.

But she can’t do either alone.

With his mile-long rap sheet, wicked grin, and bad attitude, Jack is like no boy Evie has ever known. Even though he once scorned her and everything she represented, he agrees to protect Evie on her quest. She knows she can’t totally depend on Jack. If he ever cast that wicked grin her way, could she possibly resist him?

Who can Evie trust?

As Jack and Evie race to find the source of her visions, they meet others who have gotten the same call. An ancient prophesy is being played out, and Evie is not the only one with special powers. A group of twenty-two teens has been chosen to reenact the ultimate battle between good and evil. But it’s not always clear who is on which side… “

Review:

I managed to get my hands on an ARC of Poison Princess and can I just say that this may very well be the best and most original book that I have ever read.  Kresley Cole has created this amazing post apocalyptic world where 22 real kids have superhuman powers.  They each represent a card from a tarot deck.  The kids find that they have to form alliances to win each hand against their enemies.  However in the end only one "card" can win the war.

This book is so intense you will find yourself holding your breath and gritting your teeth while each scene plays out.  There are so many twists that I couldn't find it in my power to put it down for even a second.  I was literally sitting on the edge of my seat constantly wanting to know more.  The mystery surrounding the Arcana was just too intriguing.  I have never read anything like it.

Kresley Cole has created some amazing characters.  They are easy to relate to.  Evie is this helpless girl that can't do anything for herself and Jack is this tough guy who will stop at nothing to protect her.  The chemistry between Jack and Evie is simply combustible. Their banter is fun yet so serious.  When Jack speaks you are left with no choice but to listen.  I have to be honest I never knew that Cajun French could sound so sexy!  Jacks accent was enough to make my heart flutter.  Yes that's right I hear characters speak when I read!   That's normal, Right?

As Evie grows into her power as The Empress she starts to change.  Suddenly she finds that she is not so helpless anymore.  She has an affinity for plants which she uses to protect herself.  As she gets stronger and starts to learn more about who she is she keeps Jack in the dark about what is going on with her because she is afraid of what he would think.

There is some serious sexual tension between the two of them and I think it is more than just the fact that Evie is one of the last surviving girls on the planet.  Jack gets so frustrated with her but I think it is because he is falling in love with her.  He knows that he has to protect her at all costs even when she doesn't think she needs protecting.

I wonder if Jack and Evie are going to save what's left of the world or if the world is going to tear them apart.  The future of Jack and Evie has yet to be seen.

The other Arcana cards that we met in this book were equally interesting.  Selina is The Moon, the bringer of doubt.  She has amazing archery skills but she isn't telling anyone the truth about what she knows.  Matthew is The Fool.  He sees visions of the past, present and future but he speaks in riddles so he is little help right now.  Finn is The Magician.  He can go around undetected which allows him to score supplies that help to keep everyone alive.  They all play a role, I'm just not sure yet who is on which side of the deck.

I cant wait to see what is going to happen in the next book.  Poison Princess is going to top every single chart!!  If you are in doubt about reading it don't be.  Go pre order it right now.  You are going to devour this book in just a few short hours and when its over your going to be left wanting more!

Summary from Goodreads:

To find her destiny, she must trust him with her life...and her heart.Jackson Holt makes a decent living as a private investigator in New Orleans, home of one of the largest underground supernatural populations in the United States. He and his partners have never met a case they couldn't crack...until a local bar owner asks him to do a little digging on her newest hire.

New Orleans is the fourth destination in as many months for Mackenzie Brooks, a woman on the run from a deranged stalker. After all, any man who shows up on her doorstep claiming to be her destined lover has more than a few screws loose. But crazy doesn't explain why he always finds her no matter how far she runs.

When her well-meaning boss puts a PI on her case, Mackenzie comes face to face with the incredible truth: magic is real, and whatever spell has kept her hidden and separate from the paranormal world is rapidly deteriorating.

With time running out, she has no choice but to trust Jackson as he struggles to uncover the truth of her past-and her destiny.

This book contains devious schemes, epic battles, forbidden love between a shapeshifter and a spellcaster, nosy secondary characters, furniture-endangering sex and a woman fighting to choose her own destiny.

Review:

Mackenzie is a girl on the run. Every time she thinks she has escaped from her crazy stalker Marcus, he seems to find her. Working as a bartender for a woman named Nicole (Nick) turns out to be the best move for her to make. Nick can't seem to shake the feeling that Mackenzie is hiding something from her so she has Jackson follow her home one night to make sure she is staying somewhere safe. Turns out she is staying in the slum part of town. When she is approached by this sexy man she is scared yet intrigued by his concern. Her head keeps telling her not to trust him as she has not been able to trust anyone lately. Against her better judgement she allows him to take her back to the bar where she could sleep the night in the apartment above.

Mackenzie has many secrets, some that she herself doesn't even know about herself. With her life in danger her new friends are trying to find why this man has such an obsession with her. When all the truth starts coming out it is almost too much to bare sending her entire life into total confusion. As she is dealing with the fact that not only are there species other than humans but she is one of the things that go bump in the night. This man has a plan for her and will stop at nothing to make his dream come true. No one can keep her safe and no one around her is safe. He can walk right through any ward, there is no magic spell that can keep him away. When he proves this by abducting Mackenzie can her knew friends save her before it is too late.

This book had me reading into the early hours of the morning. Every time I started to put it down something else would happen and I would have to know the outcome. I wasn't sure when I purchased it off of the free list but I am completely certain that this is a series that has me hooked and I have already purchased the next books in the series. The book was a great read, I don't recall seeing any mistakes in the printing. There is a few scenes of steamy sex and some language that may offend people if they do not like curse words. I would recommend this to everyone I know who loves a great paranormal romance. It has made it to my favorite list and has a permanent place on my bookshelf. I can't wait to see what happens next!!!!

"Once upon a time, there lived three witches…"

As a child, Amarrah loved her grandmother’s stories of three witches who were members of the king’s harem—but they were more than just stories. Amarrah knew she had been there with them…and now their legacy, along with an ancient box that once belonged to them, lies in her hands.

Charged with keeping the box safe, Amarrah is heartbroken when it is stolen from her while she moves to America. Years later, she is shocked to see it on TV and is determined to get it back. Tracking the artifact leads her to Sergeant Harrison Brockson, a handsome soldier who stirs memories of a man she knew centuries ago in ancient Babylon. Is Harrison the key to finding the box—or could he be her destiny?

Prequel novella to Maggie Shayne’s exciting trilogy, "The Portal"

Review:

I have already read the first book in this series Mark of the Witch, which was amazing!  However I wish I had read this one first.

Legacy of the Witch was a delightful book.  It helped to shed light on the three witches through Amarrah's flashbacks.  We got to see what the harem witches were like as people.  I liked that this story showed us how the box finally made its way to Indira after 3000 years.

Amarrah was lots of fun.  I enjoyed seeing her inner turmoil over losing the box.  Harrison is extremely sexy in a whole I'm here to save the day and not ask questions sort of way.  He is a true solider.

If you are looking for a quick free romance with some mystery this one is for you.  Just remember that once you read this you will be begging to get your hands on the next installment in The Portal Series!

Review: The Asylum Interviews: Trixie

The Asylum Interviews: Trixie (The Asylum Tales, #0.6)

Title:  The Asylum Interviews: Trixie
Author:  Jocelynn Drake
Series:  The Asylum Tales 0.6
Format:  Ebook
Pages:  100 pages
Release Date:  September 4th 2012
Publisher:  Harper Voyager

Summary from Goodreads:

The second of two prequel stories to Jocelynn Drake's Angel's Ink.

Gage's ex-girlfriend is back in town and needs help escaping a master vampire. While not the easiest of tasks, he certainly didn't count of getting help from a mysterious woman with a few secrets of her own.

Review:

Gage is the owner of a tattoo parlor called Asylum.  His business is running so good he can barely keep up but when his ex girlfriend Jo comes into town he decides to shut the parlor down for a night to go see her play in her band.

Jo has a favor to ask Gage.  She wants to know if he would give her friend Trixie a job interview.  Gage agrees and once he meets Trixie things start to get a little crazy.  Trixie tells him that Jo needs rescuing from a master vampire and even though he would deny it Gage has a soft side, so he demands that Trixie let him help.

He finds himself submerged in secrets, vampires, magic and gargoyles.  Let the fun begin.  Poor Gage he is a great guy but he has nothing but bad luck.

The Asylum Interviews: Trixie and Bronx are great prequels to the first book Angel's Ink.  I think it is nice to see how everyone gets to meet.  Trixie and Bronx are pretty awesome in their own ways and I cant wait to read more about this trio!

ARC Review: Mark Of The Witch

Mark of the Witch (The Portal, #1)

Title: Mark Of The Witch
Author: Maggie Shayne
Release Date: September 18th 2012
Publisher: Harlequin MIRA
Source: ARC from NetGalley
Format: Paperback
Pages: 400 pages

Summary from Goodreads:

From New York Times bestselling author Maggie Shayne comes the first novel in her thrilling new trilogy, THE PORTAL She was born to save what he is sworn to destroy...

A lapsed Wiccan, Indira Simon doesn't believe in magic anymore. But when strange dreams of being sacrificed to an ancient Babylonian god have her waking up with real rope burns on her wrists, she's forced to acknowledge that she may have been too hasty in her rejection of the unknown. Then she meets mysterious and handsome Father Tomas. Emerging from the secrecy of an obscure Gnostic sect, he arrives with stories of a demon, a trio of warrior witches-and Indira's sacred calling. Yet there's something even Tomas doesn't know, an inescapable truth that will force him to choose between saving the life of the woman he's come to love-and saving the world.

Review:

What do you get when you throw together a witch and a priest?

One hell of a sexy good time!

Mark of the Witch was an amazing read. It is different from any other book I have ever read. I really enjoyed seeing people from different religions being thrown together. It was incredible fun!

Indira is a witch that had given up on her faith years ago but now she is having these nightmares that are becoming more and more real. They are so real that they are now leaving evidence as injuries marked in her skin. She turns to her old high priestess for advice. Her friend sends her help in the form of a priest.

Father Tomas is a priest that has been chosen to stop a demon from entering this world. He must do this by finding and stopping a witch. Little does he know just how difficult his journey will be.

Both Indira and Father Tomas bring a friend with them to try to stop the demon and it seems like everyone kind of hated everyone else. It was great! Father Tomas brings Father Dom who has gone a bit crazy. He hates witches and is convinced that they are all doomed to the fiery depths of hell. Indria brings Lady Rayne who turns out to have a few secrets of her own. All of the characters in this novel are a little crazy but it made for one fun and exciting read!

I loved this book so much that I couldn't put it down. Indira and Father Tomas' connection is epic. they were meant to be together and while the reader can see it from the very beginning it was great to watch it all play out for them.

I look forward to the next book in this trilogy!

Author Interview and Giveaway with Susannah Noel

Thank you so much Susannah for stopping by Mortality Bites to talk with us today.

Susannah Noel is the Author of Word and Breath (Wordless Chronicles).

Susannah Noel

Susannah wrote her first paranormal novel when she was twelve years old--a time-travel romance written in a spiral-bound notebook that eventually starred all her friends. Since then, she has been writing romantic fiction of all varieties, including paranormal, contemporary, and historical. She can usually be found working on her laptop.

She has a PhD in British literature and teaches at a university in Virginia. She is currently working on the second Wordless Chronicle.

You can find our review of Word and Breath HERE.

THE INTERVIEW:

1      MB:  I like that books are now being labeled New Adult. We needed a space between YA and Adult. What do you think about the New Adult category?

SN:  I really like the New Adult category. I think there has always been some crossover between YA and Adult, and the New Adult category provides a natural space for it. I also think the 18-22 age range is a really exciting time in real life, so it’s fun to explore that age in fiction.

Riana, the main character of Word and Breath, is living in a different world than ours, so her situation is a little different than a 22-year-old’s from our culture. She started her job as a Reader at age 14, so she’s been working in her career a while. But she’s still trying to figure out who she is, how to have adult relationships, and what she wants from life, so in many ways she really fits into the New Adult category.

Word and Breath (Wordless Chronicles, #1)
MB:  This book is amazing! Why in the world did you self publish? Agents should be knocking down your door!

SN:  LOL. Thank you! I’ve actually had agents before, and they’ve been wonderful to work with. But the message I consistently received from publishers—when I approached them directly or through agents—was that my writing is great but my books aren’t the right “fit” for them. I can’t tell you how often I’ve heard that!

I wrote this book several years ago and queried agents with it. Several of them really liked it but weren’t sure they could sell it. This was before Hunger Games and before dystopian literature became so popular, so the book was really in between niches in a lot of ways. A few months ago, I reread the old manuscript and thought it still had a lot of potential. I’d been wanting to try self-publishing and thought this was a good book to experiment with. So I prepared the manuscript for publication and released it to the wilds. It’s been really fun so far.

MB:  I loved that this was a new type of paranormal book. How did you come up with Soul-Breathers?

SN:  I’ve always loved paranormal characters. There is so much an author can explore about real life through vampires, werewolves, and other creatures that aren’t quite human. But I wanted to do something particular with my book, and none of the regular paranormal creatures really did what I needed them to do. So I just made one up to suit my needs!

Mikel tells Riana in one scene that Soul-Breathers are like “revved-up” humans. That’s what I was trying to convey—they have mostly human characteristics, just intensified a thousand-fold.

4       MB:  Are we going to be seeing a love triangle in the next book?

SN:  Well, love triangles are always tricky! J I will say that Connor is going to do an increasingly poor job in hiding his feelings for Riana, and Mikel isn’t going to appreciate it. At all.

5       MB:  I don't think I will ever get enough of this series! How many books do you have planned?

SN:  I’ve got three books planned out, and I think that will be enough. I don’t like to extend series past the point of developing characters, and I think the arcs for these characters will be completed after three books. I do have a few ideas for other books set in the same world, so I might look into that for the future.

6       MB:  Oddly enough I'm hoping for a HEA for Largan. I liked him. Will he still be around in future books?

SN:  Yes, Largan will be a significant character in all three books. In fact, the four perspective characters will be the same throughout the series. I like Largan too. It’s funny. He started as just a stodgy bureaucrat, intended mostly to develop plot elements I couldn’t get to in any other way. But he took on a life of his own, and there’s a lot I really like about him now. I’ve got plans for him in the future!

7       MB:  Are there any spoilers you can give us about the next book?

SN:  I don’t want to give too much away, but the titles are chosen very carefully.  Connor always represents the “Word” side of the equation, and Mikel represents the other side. So there might be a few hints there.

In general, Riana and Connor will keep working on the language-mystery, and Mikel will keep trying to be a part of Riana’s life without getting sucked into the rebellion. That will get harder and harder for him to do.
